The Luxor Resort was designed in 1991, with foundations laid just a year later. The architect was Veldon Simpson.

The glass and metal facade was created by Waltek. At the time, the 30-story pyramid was considered one of the largest buildings to utilize glass and metal. It was opened in 1993.

The project was estimated at $375 million, and the complex had more than 2,500 rooms (now more than 4,000) and a casino of just over 9,000 square feet. In 1996, the atrium was expanded and a movie theater was added. In 1998, it was augmented with a theater and two additional towers.

In 2007, MGM Resorts International planned to completely renovate the entire complex, spending $300 million. As a result, the hotel retained its unique architecture, but the Egyptian theme was somewhat displaced. Attention was emphasized on modern style.
